����ԭ�� has been named one of the , ranking No. 2 in Kentucky and No. 121 in the nation for women. 

The recognition positions ����ԭ�� among top colleges for women in the United States and reflects the university’s commitment to accessible, career-focused higher education that supports women at every stage of life. 

“Earning a place on the America’s Best Colleges for Women list reflects an environment that meaningfully supports women’s success,” explained Newsweek Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Cunningham. 

In its release, Newsweek explained that the comprehensive ranking evaluates U.S. colleges across four critical categories: leadership, pay and policies, safety, and opportunity. 

The methodology draws on data from the U.S. Department of Education, including the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the Campus Safety and Security Database, along with additional desk research. 

“The ranking identifies colleges that have established the structural elements necessary to foster education and employment for women. Only institutions meeting specific criteria for size and academic roles are included, ensuring the results reflect meaningful progress toward gender equity in higher education.” 

A student-centered mission that expands access 

For Dr. Jennifer Simpson, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at ����ԭ��, the ranking is deeply personal. 

“I attended ����ԭ�� as an undergraduate student on a scholarship. I wouldn’t have been able to attend college without it,” Dr. Simpson explained. “That affordability was huge in breaking down barriers for me.” 

As a student, Dr. Simpson received a quality education that set her up for success. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science from ����ԭ�� in 2000, she went on to earn a master’s in education from Union College in 2003 and a doctorate in educational leadership from ����ԭ�� in 2012. Throughout her career, she has served in roles both inside and outside the classroom and has been recognized by the Kentucky House of Representatives for her work.  

Her journey reflects a broader institutional mission centered on serving underserved populations and removing barriers to education. At ����ԭ��, that commitment translates into a student-centered approach focused on opportunity, accessibility, and meeting individuals where they are. 

“It all comes back to the mission. We're here to serve all students to the best of our ability.” 

Affordability as a pathway to opportunity 

Affordability remains one of the most significant barriers in higher education, particularly for women balancing career, family, and financial responsibilities. 

Dr. Simpson recalled mentoring a woman in the local community who faced that reality firsthand. 

“She was a single mom and had previously taken classes somewhere else. During that initial attempt at higher education, she was forced to choose between the cost of her child’s soccer cleats and the cost of textbooks. I had the pleasure of letting her know that was something she wouldn’t have to worry about here at ����ԭ��.” 

Through initiatives like the One Price Promise, ����ԭ�� removes hidden costs, ensuring students have access to the resources they need at a single, comprehensive price point. 

Flexible degree programs designed for real life 

Flexibility is another defining factor in expanding access, particularly for women navigating multiple responsibilities.  

����ԭ��’ online programs are designed to meet students where they are, allowing them to balance education with work and family life. 

“The ability to work asynchronously in so many of our programs allows women to do work on their time. They can fulfill their calling, whatever that may be, and do so in a way that doesn’t put everything else in life on pause.” 

Dr. Simpson reflected on mentoring a student who recently completed her doctorate—an experience that highlights the long-term impact of that flexibility. 

“The only thing I asked of her in exchange for my mentorship was that she walk in graduation. I wanted her son and daughter to see her be hooded upon earning her doctorate. She was the first in her family to achieve that accomplishment, and I think that visibility is extremely important.” 

Women in leadership at ����ԭ�� 

Representation in leadership is another key factor in supporting women’s success. 

As a ����ԭ�� alumna and member of the executive leadership team, Dr. Simpson models what it means to lead with both professionalism and authenticity. 

“It’s been my honor to work alongside some incredible women throughout my career, including my female colleagues currently working alongside me in academic affairs at ����ԭ��. As I show up each day, I hope I am demonstrating that you can be a professional and a mom, a wife, a daughter, a community leader, whatever roles outside of work that mean most to you.” 

In her leadership, Dr. Simpson prioritizes a culture of support and flexibility that allows faculty and staff to care for their families while continuing to grow professionally. 

A national best college for women 

Whether mentoring students or leading academic initiatives, Dr. Simpson sees a clear throughline in her work—one rooted in service, opportunity, and impact. That same commitment is reflected in the university’s recognition as one of the best colleges for women in the nation. 

“It's amazing that we're being recognized as a best college for women. If you ask anyone around, they will tell you we’re the best college for anyone! Our goal is always to serve everyone well and prepare them to go out and impact their communities and help others. At the end of the day, that's what it's all about. But I'm super excited about this designation—very proud.”
